Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teen years, and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford returned for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
